Everything about The Shops At La Cantera totally explained
The Shops at La Cantera is an upscale open-air regional
shopping mall located in northwest
San Antonio,
Texas,
USA, near the
Loop 1604 and
Interstate 10 interchange. The initial phase of the project opened on
September 16,
2005. The 1.3-million-square-foot center sits on a 150-acre site in La Cantera, a 1,700-acre master-planned resort community being developed by
USAA Real Estate Company. (La Cantera is also home to
Six Flags Fiesta Texas, The
Westin La Cantera Resort and Spa and two world-class golf courses, The Palmer Course at La Cantera and The Westin Resort Course, which is home to the PGA
Valero Texas Open.)
Design
The concept for the center was originally developed and conceived by
The Rouse Company under a joint venture with USAA Real Estate Company. (The Rouse Company also developed other noted developments such as
South Street Seaport [NYC],
Faneuil Hall (Boston) and
Harborplace [Baltimore] as well as
North Star Mall, also in San Antonio.)
General Growth Properties acquired The Rouse Company in November 2004 as The Shops at La Cantera design created a buzz in the retail sector well before its opening in September of 2005.
The shopping center was designed by the award-winning, local architectural firm
Alamo Architects. The shopping center is designed as a single-level, garden-like "retail village" with varied storefronts, shared arcades, and subtle water features. The overall architectural style of the center has a Texas Hill Country vernacular style.
The Shops at La Cantera includes the first
Neiman Marcus and
Nordstrom in San Antonio and new stores from
Dillard's and
Foley's (now
Macy's). There are also more than 150 other shops and restaurants including newcomers to the market such as
Burberry,
Tiffany & Co.,
Hugo Boss,
Betsey Johnson,
Brooks Brothers,
BCBG Max Azria,
Apple,
Lacoste,
Tumi and
Ralph Lauren.
Construction has begun on the 300,000sf, second phase of the project, which will contain an additional 40 stores (about 30 of which are new to the market), restaurants, a large bookstore and Class A office space. The new phase of the project, also deisigned by Alamo Architects, is scheduled to open in October 2008.
Awards
- The Shops at La Cantera was the 2006 Grand Award Winner in the 17th Annual Superior Achievement in Design & Imaging (SADI) Awards competition, presented by Retail Traffic magazine.
